Ag Day Summary

Saturday was Ag Day down at the University of Delaware. Our group and our local New Castle County group, Guiding Paws, was there as well. We didn't have that many dogs to show to guests. Prior to Ag Day we had 3 puppies go back to the Seeing Eye for their evaluation. We are yet to hear anything about them. There is another meeting coming up soon on the 8th. I'll keep you posted with the time and place.

New puppy!

Ok everyone we have a new member of our club. She is a 7 month old yellow lab named Sue. She is so full of energy. We are looking forward to seeing her progess over the following months! Good Luck Sue! and Welcome to P.R.O.U.D.

Meeting on Wednesday!

The Meeting that is on Wednesday November 30th will be held in the alumni lounge at 7:30 pm in the Perkins center. We expect all puppies to be at the meeting. If you cannot make the meeting please make sure someone takes your pup to the meeting. There are many available hands to help out. Hope to see everyone there!

Officer Meeting on Monday!

On Monday November 21st, there will be an officer meeting in Trabant @ 7pm. We will be discussing our budget and how to spend it throughout the upcoming semester. Some ideas are toys for the pups, busy treats for class, and helping cover some costs that puppy raisers cover.

Pet Insurance

A fellow blogger told me that getting insurance for your pet is more popular in the UK then it is here in the United States.

Today in class I found out about a new website called Tesco. It offers insurance for your pet. The website is based in the UK but I'm sure that you can get the insurance here too. I read through some policies and nothing said that only people who lived in the UK could have the coverage.

Everyone knows how important insurance is for humans. So imagine being able to have your dog or cat insured. Well you can! PETCO now offers insurance plans for your dog or cat. If you don't want to go through PETCO for your pet's insurance check with your own insurance company. Many companies are now offering this type of insurance as well. It is absolutely worth the money! You never know what kind of accidents may happen and your pet's insurance will be there to help you.

CPR For Dogs

I came across a fellow Blogger's site and saw that he had a post on how to give CPR to your dog. I thought this was some very useful information for anyone who has a dog, wether it is a pet or a working dog. Check out Windsor Now - All About Dogs. You don't want to be stuck in a situation and not have the knowledge to save your dog's life. Remember, Dogs are Man's Best Friend!

Thanks to L^2, a fellow blogger of Dog's Eye View, I found out about these great collars that support an awesome organization.

Help support the Humane Society by purchasing a "Be Kind" CauseCollar. These collars are the dog version of the famous livestrong braclets. They are $3 a piece and fit every dog no matter what size. These collars are being used to start a new kindness campaign. You can also purchase matching "Be Kind" braclets for people.

Canine Flu help from the Seeing Eye

Many of you are aware of the Canine Flu that is going around- here are some precautionary steps and recommendations to follow:

Don't panic.
Any dog with symptoms (fever, lethargy, coughing, nasal discharge) should stay home from any group activities until 10 days after complete recovery. Have any dogs with symptoms seen by your veterinarian. When contacting the veterinarian to make an appointment, tell what signs the dog has. The veterinarian may want to take special precautions for a potential contagious disease like an end of day appointment.
Dogs can participate in their regular club activities with other dogs as long as they are healthy and haven't been boarder within 10 days.
Don't share water/food dishes and toys among dogs that are not within the same home.
Avoid contact with dogs in public areas.
Dogs should not participate in public events where there are likely to be lots of other dogs.
Avoid boarding if possible. This is a risk factor for exposure to the disease.
Any dog that does have to be boarded cannot return to campus within 10 days of boarding.

Trip Ideas!

This is another picture from our last meeting. The Yellow Lab is Presley, and the German Shepard is Cubby.
In order to get the pups more exposure outside of campus we plan on taking some club trips. One trip idea we have is taking the pups to the beach. We believe that this would be a great new experience and couldn't pass it up! If anyone has any other ideas of places to take the pups please let me know! I would love to have new ideas.

Dorm Rules!

At our last meeting we went over many rules that must be followed when living in the dorms. Here are some of the ones we went over last Wednesday:

1. The puppies always have to wear their blue bandannas. If they are not wearing the bandannas access to many places on campus may be denied.

2. Puppies are not allowed in the dorm bathrooms.
3. All waste goes into the dumpsters, not the small trash cans.
4. If someone else is puppy sitting for you, they must watch the puppy in your approved room. Kathy also must know when someone else will be watching your puppy.

My Seeing Eye Puppy!

I raised a Seeing Eye puppy last year. Her name is Eve. I raised Eve since she was 7 and a half weeks old. Eve unfortunately did not make it into the program. It was difficult for her to overcome her natural instincts. She loves to chase after animals and birds. So after we found out that Eve was not going to make the program I was offered the option to adopt her. And of course I took full advantage of that offer. So now Eve stays at home with me and she is an ex-Seeing Eye dog. This is a picture of her the first day we got her last May. She was only 6 lbs at the time and really really fluffy.

Meeting This Wednesday

If anyone is interested, there will be a PROUD meeting this Wednesday, September 28th, at 7:30 pm in the Kirkwood Room in Perkins Student Center. Kathy Daly, our area representative from The Seeing Eye, will also be attending our meeting to see our new pups. Our meetings consist of two parts. The first part is training for the dogs and the second part is where we talk about club logistics. If you are interested in raising a dog you have to come to meetings and get all the information about what is required of you.

Hurricane Katrina Affects The Seeing Eye

I'm sure some of you may have heard on the news about James Mercadal who was separated from his guide dog down along the Gulf Coast. Well, if you haven't heard this amazing story here is an article from NBC.com that couldn't have said it better. After the hurricane many people were concerned as to how fellow graduates(dogs) and their owners were doing. The Seeing Eye has been doing it's best to get in contact with these people who were affected by Hurricane Katrina. Here is what the Seeing Eye had to say, which was posted on their website.

All About PROUD

First I want to give some backgrond information on our new club. We created our constitution last year with lots of sweat and hard work, but we got it done and we are offically a registered student organization. We had our first elections last Spring and here they are:

President: Shari Feinberg
Vice President: Katie Kosinski
Treasurer: Liz Roy
Secretary: Julia O'Brien

What our club is all about is raising puppies for The Seeing Eye. We raise them until they are about 15-17 months old then they go to The Seeing Eye for the 4 month harness training with a professional trainer. Once they pass the test then they get paired with a blind person.
